VGC & RAB/BKO | Plan Atelier: Artists Working Space

What are the challenges in creating workplaces for artists in the Brussels context? The VGC and RAB/BKO organise with Meyboom Artist-run Spaces and Level Five an afternoon to exchange ideas on workspaces for artists.

The Brussels region has one of the most vibrant art scenes in Europe, with a large population of artists and art professionals. They are essential to the city's cultural life but, as independent artists, they rarely have the financial means to afford a workplace at the market price. Yet for many of them, a good workplace is an essential requirement for their artistic practice, though it is often the first thing to be saved on.

With 'Plan Atelier', VGC supports four experiments around workplaces for artists: Level Five, MAX, Meyboom Artist-run Spaces and Werkplaats Walter. Starting from these experiences, stakeholders such as artists, local authorities, policymakers, project developers, art institutions and schools exchange experiences and knowledge.

Why do artists need these workplaces? Why are artists important for the city? What are the challenges in creating workplaces for artists in the Brussels context? What has already been realised? What is needed in the long term? What are the 'quick wins' that are within reach?
